Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a life-threatening illness that is typically caused by a patient having an adverse reaction to a drug. If you or your loved ones have been diagnosed with Stevens Johnson Syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, we encourage you to contact Irpino Law at 800-750-0529 today for a free case evaluation.
First discovered in the early 1920s, Stevens Johnson Syndrome can affect men, women and children of all ages. The Syndrome typically occurs when a patient has a severe reaction to any over-the-counter or prescription drug that they have taken, but it also may occur as the result of an illness or infection. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is also associated with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, because it is an offshoot of the disease.
While any drug may cause Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, there are a few that are more commonly associated with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome than others:
- Antibiotics used to treat infections, including Sulfonamide or Penicillin
- Medications used to treat gout
- Anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat common headaches, pain or swelling
- Anti-convulsant drugs, which are used to treat seizures
The symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome can be life-threatening and may include:
- Rash, blisters, or red splotches on skin
- Persistent fever
- Blisters (face and/or genital area)
- Swelling (eyes)
- Conjunctivitis
- Flu-like symptoms
If you believe you have Stevens Johnson Syndrome, we strongly encourage you to visit your doctor immediately. Be sure to clearly identify what drugs you have been taking and if you had any existing illnesses, so your doctor can identify the cause. If left untreated, Stevens Johnson Syndrome is fatal. Part of the challenge of finding the cause of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, is that it may take one to two weeks to develop after you’ve taken a defective drug. To ensure that your health is protected, we recommend keeping a log of the medications you’re taking so that you or your loved ones can efficiently communicate with your health-care provider.
