Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a cancer resulting from exposure to asbestos. In the body, it is found in the serous membranes that surround the vital organs. These membranes, known as mesothelium, secrete a lubricating fluid that provide for easy movement of the organs within the body. The most common form of the disease is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the membranes that surround the lungs.
While considered a rare cancer, mesothelioma is not rare among individuals exposed to asbestos. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking.
Many of the corporations that manufactured and profited from the sale of asbestos-containing products were aware of the hazards of asbestos.
Asbestos was commonly used in shipbuilding, the oil and plastics industry, and in many consumer products.
If you or someone close to you has worked as a pipe fitter, in construction, hanging drywall, in shipbuilding, auto mechanics, demolition, insulation, mining, as a longshoreman, with furnaces, as a mason, bricklayer or in the Navy, then you and your family members may have been exposed to asbestos fibers.
It is vital for you and your family to get a medical assessment as soon as possible if you think that you may be at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease. As with many other illnesses, the earlier you detect your condition and begin treatment, the better your chances.
