Gustav Help

Hurricane Gustav has caused significant and/or catastrophic damage to many homes throughout Louisiana.  If you had damage to your home or personal property, or if you had to evacuate due to Hurricane Gustav, please consult the “Insurance Claim Tips” section of this website for some suggested steps to take in making your insurance claim. Homeowner’s Insurance claims generally involve the following categories of coverage:

Structure: This is the coverage on the home itself.  It typically covers wind/rain damage to the house.  Some common structure items can include: roof, siding, windows, floors, drywall, ceilings, cabinets, lighting fixtures, floors, electrical wiring, and insulation.

Please take photos of all damage, get estimates for any necessary repairs and keep all receipts and invoices for repairs made.

Other Structures: This is typically the coverage on smaller buildings such as detached garages, playhouses, sheds, etc.  As with structure damage, coverage is generally provided for wind/rain damage.

Please take photos of all damage, get estimates for any necessary repairs and keep all receipts and invoices for repairs made.

Contents: This is the coverage on personal property.  It generally covers wind/rain damage to belongings.  Some common contents can include: furniture, televisions, computers, electronics, bedding, clothing, dishes, carpets, drapes, appliances and food.

Please make a list of all damaged contents, gather any receipts showing the amount you previously paid for your damaged contents, take photos of all damaged contents and keep all receipts for replacement items.

Additional Living Expenses (ALE): This is the coverage to reimburse the expenses incurred by having to evacuate.  Some typical ALE items can include: hotel bills, meals, mileage or gas, extra clothing, rent, utilities, etc.

Please keep a log/diary which details the places to which you evacuated, the amounts spent on eating out and for additional clothing, etc., and keep all receipts for these items.
